The Death of Socrates (Jacques-Louis David, 1787)

David's Neoclassical icon isolated within a single gold-framed band, floating against black void. The horizontal composition compresses the prison cell into a frieze-like arrangement, emphasizing the theatrical staging of philosophical martyrdom. Socrates' pointing gesture and the arrangement of disciples around him remain intact, but the containment strategy changes how we read the space—less architectural depth, more emblematic display.

Painted three years before the French Revolution, this work became a visual manifesto for Enlightenment ideals and revolutionary sacrifice. David depicted the moment Socrates reaches for hemlock after being condemned by Athens for corrupting youth and impiety. The severe geometry, stoic color palette, and sculptural figures represented a deliberate rejection of Rococo frivolity in favor of classical virtue and civic duty. The painting influenced revolutionary iconography and established David as the principal artist of the Republic, demonstrating how Neoclassicism wasn't merely aesthetic revival but political ideology rendered in paint.

A Length

Place the end of the tape beside the collar at the top of the tee (Highest Point Shoulder). Pull the tape measure to the bottom of the shirt.

B Width

Place the end of the tape at the seam under the sleeve and pull the tape measure across the shirt to the seam under the opposite sleeve.

C Sleeve length

Place one end of the tape at the top of the set-in sleeve, then pull the tape down until you reach the hem of the sleeve.
