Dante and Virgil in Hell (William-Adolphe Bouguereau, 1850)

Bouguereau's Academic masterwork sectioned into three horizontal bands, each framed in gold against black voids. The composition separates witness from violence from aftermath, forcing reconstruction rather than passive viewing. What was a frozen tableau becomes sequential. The negative space matters as much as the painted surface.

Bouguereau painted this at 25, submitting it to the 1850 Paris Salon where it shocked viewers with its unflinching depiction of infernal violence. The work depicts a scene from Dante's Inferno—the damned poets Gianni Schicchi and Capocchio locked in eternal combat in the eighth circle of Hell, observed by Dante and Virgil. It established Bouguereau's reputation for technical mastery willing to confront disturbing subject matter, bridging Romantic intensity with Academic precision at a moment when French painting was negotiating between idealism and raw human experience.

A Length

Place the end of the tape beside the collar at the top of the tee (Highest Point Shoulder). Pull the tape measure to the bottom of the shirt.

B Width

Place the end of the tape at the seam under the sleeve and pull the tape measure across the shirt to the seam under the opposite sleeve.

C Sleeve length

Place one end of the tape at the top of the set-in sleeve, then pull the tape down until you reach the hem of the sleeve.
