The Last Day of Pompeii (Karl Bryullov, 1833)

Bryullov's monumental disaster scene fragmented into horizontal bands separated by black voids. The cascading chaos of fleeing figures, collapsing architecture, and volcanic sky is sectioned into distinct planes. What was painted as overwhelming catastrophe becomes parsed into registers—each band holding its own drama while contributing to the total apocalypse. The gold frames impose order on depicted chaos.

Bryullov spent six years in Italy studying the ruins of Pompeii and researching the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius. This massive canvas (over 15 feet wide) caused a sensation when exhibited in Rome and Paris, then triggered nationalist pride when brought to Russia. It represented Russian painting's arrival on the European stage, combining Italian Renaissance composition with Romantic drama. The work influenced both Bulwer-Lytton's novel "The Last Days of Pompeii" and subsequent disaster spectacle in visual culture, establishing the template for depicting mass catastrophe with operatic grandeur and archaeological precision.

A Length

Place the end of the tape beside the collar at the top of the tee (Highest Point Shoulder). Pull the tape measure to the bottom of the shirt.

B Width

Place the end of the tape at the seam under the sleeve and pull the tape measure across the shirt to the seam under the opposite sleeve.

C Sleeve length

Place one end of the tape at the top of the set-in sleeve, then pull the tape down until you reach the hem of the sleeve.
