The same scene reorganized through different horizontal divisions. The sectioning creates new relationships between figures and architectural elements, altering the reading of spatial depth and narrative flow. The placement of voids shifts which moments of panic receive emphasis. Multiple treatments of the same source material demonstrate how fragmentation is interpretive, not neutral.
This version engages with how the painting has been reproduced, cropped, and excerpted since its creation. Bryullov constructed the work to be read as a unified spectacle, but 19th-century engravings, 20th-century book illustrations, and digital circulation have already fragmented it countless times. By making the fragmentation explicit and systematic rather than arbitrary, the design acknowledges our contemporary relationship to historical images—we rarely encounter them whole, but as pieces scrolled past, zoomed into, sampled for reference.
