Dante and Virgil in Hell (William-Adolphe Bouguereau, 1850)
Bouguereau's Academic masterwork sectioned into three horizontal bands, each framed in gold against black voids. Bouguereau painted this at 25, submitting it to the 1850 Paris Salon where it shocked viewers with its unflinching depiction of infernal violence. The work depicts a scene from Dante's Inferno—the damned poets Gianni Schicchi and Capocchio locked in eternal combat in the eighth circle of Hell, observed by Dante and Virgil.
