The Grasshopper (Jules Joseph Lefebvre, 1872)

Lefebvre's portrait fragmented into horizontal strips interrupted by black bands. The figure descends through deliberate breaks in continuity. Luminous Academic technique preserved while being systematically interrupted. The treatment raises questions about observation and display without providing answers.

Lefebvre was a prominent Academic painter who specialized in technically refined figure studies that walked the line between classical idealization and naturalistic observation. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts under Léon Cogniet, he won the Prix de Rome in 1861. His work represents the high point of French Academic painting's ability to render flesh with almost photographic precision while maintaining compositional grace. The title refers to La Fontaine's fable about improvidence, adding moral dimension to what appears as pure aesthetic contemplation.

A Length

Place the end of the tape beside the collar at the top of the tee (Highest Point Shoulder). Pull the tape measure to the bottom of the shirt.

B Width

Place the end of the tape at the seam under the sleeve and pull the tape measure across the shirt to the seam under the opposite sleeve.

C Sleeve length

Place one end of the tape at the top of the set-in sleeve, then pull the tape down until you reach the hem of the sleeve.
