The Martyrdom of Saint Catherine (Sebastiano Ricci, c. 1700s)
Ricci's Baroque spectacle, divided into three framed sections with bold vertical and horizontal black interruptions. The celestial realm of descending angels occupies the upper zones, the architectural space of martyrdom holds the middle, and the earthly plane of torture implements and witnesses anchors below. The composition's vertical aspiration, typical of Catholic Counter-Reformation altarpieces, is deliberately collapsed into horizontal registers, then further disrupted by the vertical black bar that splits divine intervention from human witness.
Ricci painted numerous versions of Saint Catherine's martyrdom throughout his career, a popular subject showing the moment angels destroyed the spiked wheel meant to execute her. Working in Venice during the late Baroque period, Ricci synthesized the theatrical drama of Roman Baroque with Venetian coloristic brilliance, influencing the development of Rococo painting. His dynamic compositions and luminous palette made him sought after across Europe for church commissions and secular decorations. The work exemplifies how martyrdom scenes served both devotional and aesthetic purposes, inspiring faith through spectacular violence rendered with painterly virtuosity.
